Mallorca is just a brilliant place for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.  They’re treated to a really diverse array of ecosystems and potential sightings of really interesting variety of avian residents.

If you’re a seasoned birder, a lover of natures beauty, or both then Mallorca has got you covered.

Why Mallorca for Birdwatching?

So what sets Mallorca apart as such a great destination for birdwatchers? 

Mallorca’s really varied landscapes and nature reserves makes it perfect for viewing and photographing a really diverse range of birds, from flamingos to finches, black vultures to blue rock thrushes. 

There’s wetlands, mountains, flat plains and coastal cliffs, so it’s not surprising with such varied habitats for birds to thrive that Mallorca makes it such a popular place for serious birders. 

On top of that, its a strategic bird watching location along major bird migration routes. A vibrant hotspot for avian diversity throughout the whole year.

What is even better is that all the habitats are easily accessible in a day from where ever you are staying on the island.

Where to Birdwatch in Mallorca

Protected Areas and Nature Reserves

Protected areas and nature reserves are the natural habitat of birdwatchers. In Mallorca you’ll find scattered across the whole island an abundance of wonderful reserves and remote areas to photograph and enjoy. 

No matter where you’re staying there will be one close by.

S’Albufera Natural Park: A Wetland Reserve

S’Albufera Natural Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise located near the town of Alcúdia. 

This is an expansive wetland reserve renowned for its diverse avian population. It’s a must-visit destination for birdwatchers. 

In the park’s marshes, lagoons, and reed beds birdwatchers can expect to see flocks of flamingos wading in its shallow waters as well as numerous bird species like Marsh Harriers, Herons, Mallards, Northern Shovelers, Teal, Warblers, Ospreys and many more. 

S’Albufera offers excellent birdwatching opportunities year-round, with different species present during each season. 

  • Type of Birds: Flamingo, Marsh Harriers, Herons, Mallards, Northern Shovelers, Teal, Warblers and Kingfishers
  • Topography: Wetlands, marshes, and lagoons.
  • Directions by Car: From Palma, take the Ma-13 highway towards Alcúdia. Take the exit for Muro and follow signs for S’Albufera Natural Park.

Cap de Formentor: Coastal peninsula

Cap de Formentor, located up at the northern tip of Mallorca. It’s a rugged peninsula with dramatic coastal scenery and a diverse birdlife.

Birdwatchers love to this iconic peninsula, expect to see Peregrine Falcons and Audouin’s Gulls. in flight. 

The cliffs obviously provide perfect nesting sites for seabirds, and the rocky outcrops and scrublands support Blue Rock Thrushes and Sardinian Warblers. 

Cap de Formentor’s is a great day trip. Stunning landscapes and abundant birdlife, a great destination for birdwatching enthusiasts and photographers.

  • Type of Birds: Peregrine Falcons, Blue Rock Thrushes and Sardinian Warblers and Audouin’s Gulls.
  • Topography: Cliffs, scrubland, and Mediterranean Maquis.
  • Directions by Car: From Palma, follow the Ma-13 highway towards Alcúdia. At the roundabout near Puerto Pollensa, take the exit for Cap de Formentor and continue along the winding road until you reach the peninsula.

Puig de Randa: A Mountain Sanctuary

Puig de Randa, A mountain located in the south central heart of Mallorca. Its offers birdwatchers the opportunity to see a wide range of bird species, as well as visiting the three separate Hermitages located on the mountain.

The summit offers the most stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. 

Not a huge diversity of species here, but birdwatchers visiting Puig de Randa will have the chance to spot blue rock thrushes, finches, kestrals and other birds of pray. 

Puig de Randa is a great chance to combine birdwatching and a cultural visit all in one place. An enjoyable day trip.

  • Type of Birds: Black Vultures, Kestrels, and Blue Rock Thrushes.
  • Topography: Mountains, pine forests, and rocky outcrops.
  • Directions by Car: From Palma, take the Ma-15 highway towards Manacor. Take the exit for Algaida and follow signs for Puig de Randa.

S’Albufereta Natural Reserve: A Coastal Gem

S’Albufereta Natural Reserve, located about 10 kilometres north of S’Albufera and still close to the town of Alcúdia. It’s a real gem of a location for birdwatchers, tranquility and natural beauty combined. 

Less visited and less abundant than S’Albufera this is another coastal reserve featuring flat salt marshes, minor sand dunes, and coastal scrubland.

Birdwatchers visiting S’Albufereta should find flamingos feeding and herons along the shoreline, and in the flatlands Kentish plovers. S’Albufereta is a stopover point for numerous bird other species migrating between Europe and Africa.

A quieter, less visited reserve, peaceful ambiance and scenic vistas, an ideal spot for photographers.

  • Type of Birds: Flamingos, Herons, and Kentish plovers. Seasonal Swifts and Swallows.
  • Topography: Salt marshes, sand dunes, and coastal scrub.
  • Directions by Car: From Palma, take the Ma-13 highway towards Alcúdia. Follow signs for S’Albufereta Natural Reserve along the coast road.
Boquer Valley Birdwatching in Mallorca

Boquer Valley: Hiking & Birdwatching

Boquer Valley, nestled between the mountains and the sea na little north of the Port of Pollença. 

This is a more “hard core” location but it does offers birdwatchers the chance to explore a pristine, rugged natural landscapes just teeming with birdlife.

The valley’s challenging terrain is the habitat for a variety of bird species, Bonelli’s Eagles have been spotted and you can also expect Stone and Chaffinches as well as Hoopoes. 

Quite a challenging environment but birdwatchers visiting Boquer Valley are rewarded with stunning mountain and coastal views, as well as the abundant birdlife. 

  • Type of Birds: Bonelli’s Eagles, Sardinian Warblers, Hoopoe and various Finches
  • Topography: Gorse, the odd olive grove, and Mediterranean scrubland.
  • Directions by Car: From Palma, take the Ma-13 highway towards Pollensa. Follow signs for Cala Sant Vicenç and park near the entrance to Boquer Valley.

In each of these stunning locations, birders can really appreciate Mallorca’s natural beauty and I think you’ll be impressed at the incredible array of avian life that calls Mallorca home. 

Whether you want to explore flora and fauna on coastal cliffs, tranquil wetlands, or rugged mountains, then you’ll find Mallorca offers you endless opportunities to enjoy your birdwatching passion. 

Mix it in with a lot of photography, discovery and a little adventure. 

So my advice is grab your camera, lace up your boots and don’t hesitate.
